While these narrow valves is common on more expensive bicycles (they accommodate narrower tires at higher pressures) they’re a departure from the wide Schrader valves you find on mountain bike or in your car.
Just try sticking a compressor nozzle onto a Presta valve and see what happens. It won’t fit. The nozzle’s too big and the valve itself’s too small.
If you force it, you’ll bend the valve stem and ruin your wheel. What you need is some kind of bridge from system to system. That’s where the Presta adapter comes into play.
For about 50 cents (less than a dollar), you get this small bit of metal with a screw-on end that attaches to the Presta valve. When screwed on, the Presta adapter turn the Presta valve into a Schrader-style valve. Meaning it will accept any standard compressor nozzle without issue.

Maintaining Your Portable Air Compressor
To keep things running smoothly you’ll want to maintain your compressor. While there isn’t much maintenance, taking care of it helps it last longer. For bikes, an oil-free compressor work best due to its cleanliness and lack of maintenance.
Just be sure to periodically check the air filter; it can get dirty and block airflow which leads to overheating of the motor. Also store it somewhere dry since the metal parts can start to rust. Lastly, if you do tend to coil up the hose, make sure to inspect it occasionally for any signs of wear or cracking.
