A rear tire hisses as air escapes. You know that feeling of panic well. That sound means something other than lost air pressure, and that something is a diminishing sense of adventure.

Your vehicle has gone flat on some random trail and now it seems like miles until the next shop. Everyone thinks the only way to fix this is with a gas unit or a shop compressor. But the truth is, it’s far more portable.

Piston vs Diaphragm Compressor Types

The answer depends on how you’ll use it. There are two kinds: A piston or diaphragm design, both 12V compressors. Piston compressors are the heavy lifters and produces lots of heat because they use a lubricated cylinder to move air.

Choosing Durable Hoses and Gauges

Hoses and gauges are frequently overlooked items that we don’t pay attention to until something fails. Digital gauges are nice, but they aren’t always accurate. A good quality unit will have a mechanical gauge that seems to last longer.

Also, the hose material is important, and you want a hose made of braided nylon, not a flimsy piece of plastic. These types of hoses can burst at higher pressures. They can also become restricted by kinking, which reduces airflow.

When the hose is kinked, the compressor has to work harder, which means it gets hotter, thus creating a vicious cycle. Get yourself a good kit that includes a quick connect coupler that really locks into place and a reinforced hose. There shouldn’t be any air leaking while you fill your tires.

Maintenance and Filter Cleaning

The last bit of wisdom I’ll impart is about maintenance. Off-road air contains a lot of sand, dust, and other fine particulates that will destroy your seals and piston rings if they get into the compressor and the filter isn’t cleaned on a regular basis. Most filters are easily removable from the intake housing and you should do so after each trip.

Thirty seconds, but forget about it and what was once a $200 tool becomes a $200 paperweight in a matter of months. Keep it clean, keep it cool, and keep it hooked up to a good power source. Offroading is forever changed with a dependable 12V compressor.

A stranded episode becomes an annoying moment; not some tow truck whim or another person’s good will. You can fix it yourself. That peace of mind is worth more than the cost of the unit.
