Signs Your Desiccant Beads Need Replacement

How do you know? Silica gel/alumina desiccant beads are used to soak up water molecules; they don’t last forever. When they’re full, they’re full.

Then what? Nothing. The dew point creep upward, and you realize it’s time for new beads.

What’s the dew point? Generally it’s close to freezing or below. It’s easy to tell because if you get a bead of moisture in any tool or tank, you’ve exceeded your limit.

Go past that line and all your nozzles and hoses may suffers corrosion.

Safety Steps Before Opening the Dryer

Isolate the unit for replacement. Remove any and all pressure from system by turning off compressor.

Sounds simple enough right? That’s why everyone rushes this part. There should of be absolutely no pressure when you open the housing of your dryer.

Removing Old Beads and Cleaning the Vessel

Find the container that holds desiccant. Typically it is a vertical cylinder with a drain port on bottom. Remove access panel either by unscrewing or unbolting it.

Be careful here, the beads will come tumbling out. Keep a large plastic bag or bucket handy. The beads are heavy and they gets everywhere.

Don’t just sweep them onto the floor because they are abrasive and hard to clean up later. They’re hard to pick up later and they’ll be rough on your flooring. Many people skip this step when cleaning their vessel.

Big mistake. The old beads leave behind fine particles and dust. This fill up the internal valves and distribution plates causing them to clog.

Vacuum the interior clean or use compressed air.

Inspecting the Internal Screen and Valves

Examine molecular sieve support grid. Any damage?

If mesh is torn, it won’t hold new beads in place. They’ll fall through into airflow. Major problem.

Replace screen if necessary. A cheap part that prevents a lot of headache. Go slow on this one.

A clean container allow the new media to flow properly and last longer.

Choosing the Correct Replacement Media

The type of replacement media must be correct. For general shop use, silica gel is popular.

This works reasonably well in moderately humid environments. For severe environment, alumina provides more capacity. Consult manufacturer specs for your dryer.

Some models has special requirements like size and/or type of bead. Incorrect media will harms the system. And it may decrease efficiency.

Don’t take chances. Read manual. Examine old beads.

You want to match what is required by original specs. The dryer should work as intended. Experimenting with alternatives isn’t a good idea here.

Properly Filling the Dryer with New Beads

Filling the dryer with fresh beads must be done carefully. It is best to add a little at a time. Dumping in a large amount will compress media too much and may also cause air pockets.

Don’t usually press them down. If manual specifies tamping then OK but otherwise don’t. You want the beads to have room to move and expand.

Add until you reach fill line (or what manufacturer suggests). Too much will impede airflow. Not enough means less capacity.

Go for the middle. Close access panel tightly and verify that gaskets and seals is intact. A leak makes the whole thing useless.

Testing the System and Troubleshooting

Finally, test the system. Switch compressor back on. Run it awhile.

If your compressor has a dew point display, check it out. Did it drop as far as you hoped? Listen for any odd sounds.

What does air coming from outlet feel like? Is it dry? If it isn’t, then perhaps there are leaks somewhere (maybe between the valves, or in housing).

Sometimes it’s not the beads; maybe a failing fan or a stuck pilot valve. Maintaining the system is an iterative process. Fix what’s obvious first.

Then dig further if things aren’t right. That dry air feeds into rest of your tools. Keep the media fresh and keep system clean.
