Why Tank Size Is Misleading
Now it’s taking forever for your air compressor to charge back up. You’re just sitting there while time ticks away from your project. When shopping for an air compressor, many people pay attention only to tank size (e.g., 20-gallon, 30-gallon).
They should of also consider CFM rating. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. In other words, it’s a measure of airflow: how much volume are moved under pressure?
While a big tank (i.e., more gallons) stores lots of air, it doesn’t push it out quickly. What you want is something that move air fast enough to keep up with your equipment. CFM rating matter most if you’re working with impact wrenches and heavy hardware.
It also matters if you’re sanding non-stop or painting. The most important thing is knowing there’s a difference between advertised and delivered CFM. What do they mean by free air delivery?
They’re talking about that theoretical max performance under perfect conditions. In real world conditions, your hose is restricted, it’s hot, there’s friction. You won’t see those headline numbers much.
Instead look for their rated CFM @ 90 PSI. That’s the working pressure of most shop tools. So if you have a machine listed as 20 CFM at zero pressure, but it delivers 10 CFM at its working pressure, that’s where projects gets stalled.
Understanding True CFM Ratings
Most oil lubricated pumps run longer with more consistent performance then their oil free types. The oil cuts down on friction in the cylinder. This allows the piston to run cooler and faster.
It really prolongs the life of the pump. Companies such as Ingersoll Rand and Quincy have made their reputation by building rock solid workhorses. They are noisier, they weigh more, and need regular oiling.
But when you are sanding for an hour or two at a time, the oil bath prevents the machine from seizing up. Oil free units is fine for intermittent tasks like inflating tires or occasional nailing, but they struggle under continuous high load. When asked to continuously work hard, they stall out.
Oil Lubricated Versus Oil Free Pumps
For home shop, there are some very high CFM compressors available. These have two stages of compression. What that means is that the compressor sucks in ambient air and squeeze it once into intermediate pressure.
Then it takes that pressurized air and squeezes it again to create your tank pressure. That two step process produce more air using less heat. This makes them more efficient than a single stage pump.
You’ll see this tech on bigger stationary compressors from companies like California Air Tools or Porter Cable. They aren’t portable, they hog floor space, and they are expensive. But they deliver the kind of volume you need if you’re running professional grade tool.
Two Stage Compression Technology
Besides the compressor, consider also the diameter of your hose. The smaller the diameter, the more restricted the flow. The further the air travels, the more the pressure drop.
So if you have a high CFM machine and then run air through a narrow quarter inch hose, you aren’t getting all that you should be. Get a bigger hose: preferably five eighths or three quarter inch in diameter. Keep it on a reel so the shop stays neat and tidy.
Getting a good hose is worth the investment because your tools performs consistently. You want full force air at the nozzle. The golden rule is to match the compressor to the heaviest tool.
Choosing the Right Air Hose
What’s the most demanding air tool? Check its CFM requirement. Add in a safety margin of ten percent.
Get a compressor with 4.5 CFM or higher if you’re using an impact wrench that requires 4 CFM. Don’t buy based on what you’ve got today. Buy based on what you might want someday.
A high airflow unit can handle light duties without breaking a sweat. When it does less work, it’ll run quieter and cooler. The opposite isn’t true.
A low output unit will never catch up to heavy demands. Don’t wait for it to happen in your shop. The work waits because you chose a compressor with low airflow, but when the air flows freely, your work flows freely.
Pick a compressor that fits your goals. Read the specs, look at hose setup, the true world CFM ratings, the pump type. Let the marketing fluff pass you by.
Matching Compressor to Tool Needs
Pay attention to how they get air to where it needs to go. The one that does it right, you won’t even notice its there. Just working.
