Oil-free Air Compressor Maintenance
A lot of people prefer oil-free air compressors due to the minimal maintenance that these units require. There is not much that you need to do to ensure that they continue to function optimally. Oil-free air compressors are permanently lubed pump cylinders that do not have to be further lubricated. Therefore, you do not have to worry about oil changes.
However, the thing that needs to be kept in mind is that while it is true that these units require minimal maintenance, it does not imply that you leave them on their own completely. Routine maintenance steps are still needed before you use them every time to make sure that they continue to operate safely and efficiently.
The air compressor safety valve
The first thing that you need to do is to check the safety valve. Make sure that you are wearing safety glasses while doing so. To check the air compressor safety valve, you need to plug the unit in, allowing it to run till it reaches the shut-off pressure. Once this is done, pull out on the safety valve ring so that the pressure is released from the tank.
The valve should automatically close if it is working fine. If it does not close automatically or if the air release is not allowed when you pull the valve out, it is time to replace the check valve.
Drain the tank
The air which finds its way to the air tank of the compressor contains moisture that condenses to form water. Therefore, it is essential that you drain the tank after every use. The drain valve should be present underneath the tank at the bottom of the unit. Open the drain valve, ensuring that all the water is drained out.
Air compressor filter
Various air compressor models have air filters located at various places. Usually, the filter is located around the head, underneath the plastic housing. Take a look at the manual guide of your unit to find out where the air filter is present.
If the air filter of your unit is made from paper, it should be replaced when you notice signs of dirt or wear. If you have a foam filter, make sure that you clean it with soap regularly. The filter should be completely dry before you reinstall it. The air filter has to be removed if it is damaged or worn out.
Visual inspection of the air compressor
You need to take a close look at your unit to make sure that everything is working fine. Inspect everything, from the valves and hoses to seals and fittings for any signs of cracks or wear. The power cord should also be checked for damage or fraying. Replace any part that shows signs of damage.
The air tank should be checked for weak spots or rust. If the tank is damaged, it cannot be repaired. You will need to replace it.
