This time you stand at the counter with a wrench in hand. You’ve got one in your hand and a decision to make. On paper, two fractions sitting side-by-side and connected only by a slash don’t seem like much.
However, when viewed through lens of an impact wrench, this distance covers all of your tasks: How quickly do you perform them? What bolts can be loosened? Do you feel like you’re toting around a burden or a toolbox?
Your selection here isn’t based off grabbing the largest available. Rather, it involves pairing the machine to the task. This is where most homeowner go wrong.
Bigger sounds better, so they buy the biggest drive they can afford. But then they realize that drive won’t fit in their light suspension parts or their tight engine bay. Or they buy the smallest drive available and can’t break loose a rusted axle nut.
Understanding physical accessibility versus torque delivery is the sweet spot. Knowing where practicality begins and power ends is what you need. The term drive size are referring to the square opening into which the socket fits.

Torque Output vs Breaking Strength
The biggest confusion comes with torque output. The newer tools, especially the three-eighth-inch versions from companies such as DeWalt and Milwaukee, put out an insane amount of torque. Some of them outperform or at least equal the torque ratings of their bigger half-inch predecessors.
Don’t let the marketing sheet fool you. Breaking strength is not torque rating. While your three-eighth-inch tool may have plenty of rotational power to spin a bolt tight, the smaller square drive can actualy rip apart under excessive stress.
It’s a weak link in the chain. Pushing past the design limit risks not only damage to the fastener, but also the tool itself. Anybody who has done repairs will tell you: Weight kills.
Ergonomics and Tool Weight
Fatigue also kills. A half-inch impact wrench is heavier. Although it isn’t as noticeable while it’s sitting in your hands, it sure feels like it after an hour of having it held over your head.
The three-eighth-inch model is much lighter. That lightness reduces the strain on your shoulders and wrists. After a full day of work, it makes a big difference.
You’re not fighting the tool itself, and can get the job done quicker. In the end, ergonomics trump raw power. Which will I purchase?
Which Impact Wrench Should You Buy
Honestly, that depends upon the repairs you’ll be making. The 3/8-inch size is probably your go-to if you’re a DIY’er who primarily maintains motorcycles and changes tires on your car. For small mechanical work and most around-the-house chores, this should of do just fine.
You can fit it where you really want/need it. The half-inch is for those of you working with heavy machinery, performing repairs on trailers or doing extensive modification work on your trucks. Don’t make the mistake of relying solely on specifications when choosing between the two.
If you can afford it, have both. That’s what many mechanics do. They use the three-eighth inch for everyday stuff and then break out the half-inch when they need some crushing power.
With this combo you have the best of both worlds: the smaller drive gives you access and speed, while the bigger drive provides the crushing power. For a serious shop, it doesn’t get better than this. If you’re not sure where to begin, start with the size that’s closest to whatever you do most often.
As your projects increase in scope, add to your collection. Ultimately, use what fits in your hand (and the job). Size is more than a number.
Size is also an enabler and a constraint. Select carefully, and your wrenches will feel like part of you instead of something you carry as a burden.
