Briggs & Stratton Air Compressor Won’t Idle Down

Briggs & Stratton is no new name to us they are known as one of the world’s biggest small engine producers and a leading marketer in producing pressure washers, generator, and lawn and garden turf care products. They are serving from over 100 years, winning the hearts of people around the world.

The engine system in B&S air compressors is prudently governed and monitored during the process of assembling and testing the machines. Nevertheless, the idle system of all B&S engines are set from the factory at 1750 RPM, the idle speed of an engine during its production is about 100 RPM, which is usually made for a newly produced cold engine that runs only for 30 seconds. It is completely normal if the idle speed of an air compressor increases when engine breaks-in and warm-up.

The idle system of an engine diminishes the speed and manage the speed that is being in air compressors or any other engines that produces power by pressurizing the fluids and gases. The idle system consists of a switch to control pressure or flow that is activated when detects flow in the loading device. When that switch is activated, the engine alternator energized the electromagnet through a diode rectifier.

Adjusting the Idle System of the Engine

In order to make sure that your engine is smoothly running, it is important to clean the carburetor and linkages of your engine. Make sure that tubes are completely lubricated and the air from the air compressor is easily emitting and creating pressurized air. In order to adjust your B&S air compressor’s engine idle system and to make it work properly, you need to run certain measures.

  1. Turn on the engine and set it at operating temperature when making adjustments.
  2. Identify the screw of an idle mixture and rotate it in clockwise up until the needle kind indicator touched the seat and then rotate the screw counterclockwise.
  3. There is a main jet adjustment screw on the base of the float bowl, turn it in clockwise until it touches the emulsion tube. Now turn it towards anti-clockwise, replace the cleaner, and start the engine for final adjustments.
  4. Run it for about 5 minutes and bring it up at its desired temperature. Turn the mixture knob into clockwise until the engine slowly starts, repeat this process and then turn it towards the midpoint.
  5. While the engine starting at idle, behold the throttle arm against the speed screw and bring it to idle. Repeat the process from step 4 to level the mixture.

The older models carburetors are more adjustable then the new ones, on float kind carburetors you can adjust the engine speed at idle. Make sure to check the idle speed screw to maintain the throttle from closing and a mixture screw that limits the flow. If it consists of these screws you can easily proceed with the steps mentioned above.
