They’re to get back what you paid for in the first place: pressure. When most folks talk about finding leaks they believe it’s necessary to have an expensive ultrasonic detector. It isn’t.
With a little patience and some basic tools, you’ve got yourself a solution. If you go through it systematically, it’s easy. Start without compressor running.

Visual Inspection of Hose Connections
That’s right, while there is zero pressure in the system. Are any hose couplers or quick-connect fittings worn? These things don’t need to be shiny new, but if the rubber insert on the coupler are flattened out or cracked, it won’t seal correctly when you turn it back on.
Now replace them. A few bucks now to save hundreds later. It’s one of the easiest steps many shops miss because it isn’t leaking until the air turns on.
Do a visual inspection on each connection from output of your compressor to the last drop line in your shop… Now you can avoid an hour of searching later. With everything tightened up and looking good, fire her up and turn off all tools while pressuring up the system.
Engage the compressor and let it fill tank to cut-off pressure then cycle off. With the doors closed and your ears listening for nothing, walk about the shop. Can you hear anything?
Finding Leaks with Tape and Soap
That’s right, it’s usually the quietest places like big open areas with no noise or near loud machines. Grab a roll of clear plastic or some masking tape. Take it to where you think there might be one.
If there is leaking air behind the tape, it will flutter. Why does it work? Because now you have turned an audible issue into a visual one.
Leaks from pipe joints, regulators and even valves shows up this way when they can barely be heard. You must find leaks with precision. The gold standard is soapy water.
Mix dish soap with water in a spray bottle. Then spritz that baby all over your suspect weak spots. If there’s a leak, you’ll see bubbles appear.
Not a lot. It is just enough to waste more air then you think. Don’t just blindly shoot high pressure areas.
First, hit the quick connect body and then look at the threaded joint. Those two is the most common failure points in small commercial and home systems. Tape off each one you find so you can address them in turn.
It is tedious, yes. It is thorough. How do you know how to fix something if you don’t know where it is?
Repairing Old Pipe Systems
If your shop has an old air system made of rigid black iron or aluminum pipe, these are especially vulnerable. Pressure is contained via thread sealant. As this ages, it will either degrade or vibrate out.
It forms micro-leaks at each tee and elbow. Instead of finding one large leak, more often than not, you’ll end up with dozens of small ones. They adds up.
If the sealant has degraded, replace it. Or better yet, invest in some push-to-connect fittings, which make repairs easy down the road. Companies like DeWalt and Milwaukee offer compatible accessories for fittings and repairs.
Changing over makes finding any new leaks even easier. No need to dig into threads whenever you suspect something might be wrong. Look at your air tools, such as an impact wrench.
Checking Tools and After Coolers
Take them out of their quick disconnect and put a finger over the exhaust port. While the trigger is not engaged, feel for escaping air. Does it feel like there’s air going somewhere?
If so, the tool have a leak inside. Older air tools does this and so do air tools that get beat up pretty hard. Replace or repair the tool so you no longer waste air.
Also no more tool not performing correctly all the time. Another common cause is a bad rattle trap/after cooler on the compressor itself. These parts take more abuse than others and last less time since they’re close to the hot stuff.
Check ’em regularly. Pretty easy to overlook because they’re inside the big unit. Repairing leaks doesn’t happen once.
Making Leak Detection a Habit
It’s a habit. It is a maintenance habit. Run that leak test every three months.
Sure, it may have been an hour-long deep dive the first time; but after that, it’ll be a 10-minute task. And then you’ll find problems as they arise instead of waiting until they get worse. Your compressor lasts longer, runs cooler.
Your air tools hit harder, and more consistently. The cost savings from electricity pay for your repairs multiple times. Learn to stop hearing the hiss.
